Ghost City Fengdu

This is the only necropolis in China. It represents the Taoist/Buddhist belief that Hell is a replica of the earthly justice system and bureaucracy, well provided with torture facilities. It is located in the otherworld, inside a tall mountain of kitsch.

As a first approximation, Hell consists in 700 steps to climb in the heat of the day. Diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, so I refrained; only beloved wife went all the way and returned with memorabilia. In the meantime I squandered money at the flea market below.

Judgement and punishment

Notice that the Chinese devils are blue.

A peep into hell.

When completed, this will be a 5 star hotel. But, of course, Dante assures us that there are no stars in Hell.

Demons

Only the virtuous may cross the bridge without falling into Hell.

Venerable judges of the other world.

Cessation of pain

The Emperor (the weird headdress is the Chinese imperial crown)

Judge and executioners

Facing the judge and the executioners, the goddess of mercy, Guanyin aka Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara.

These golden divinities are supposed to protect children and give them good qualities.

Beating bad children

Or, to be politically correct, only devilish monsters beat children.

The maiden ghost

Notice she is a westerner.

Out of Hell, FINALLY !
